This water hyacinth square basket is a deep woven storage basket with handles worked into the sides, in two sizes or as a set of both. The small measures 35 x 35 x 29 cm at 1.3 kg; the medium is 40 x 40 x 32 cm at 1.7 kg. Deep and square rather than shallow, it takes blankets, toys, shoes or laundry.

Square corners are hard to hold in a woven basket, which is why this one is built onto a metal framework rather than woven free. The frame keeps the four sides upright and the corners sharp, so the basket sits flush into a corner or against a wall and makes use of the full footprint. At 29 and 32 cm deep it is one of the deeper baskets in the hyacinth range, so things go in rather than on.

How does this differ from your other hyacinth baskets?

Depth and shape. This is the deep square one at 29 to 32 cm. Our rectangular hyacinth basket is 19 to 23 cm deep, and the shallow rectangular one only 9 to 12 cm. If you want things contained and out of sight, this is the one; if you want them visible, take a shallower basket.

Will it keep its shape when empty?

Yes. The weave is built onto a metal frame, so the sides stay square and upright whether it is loaded or not.

Which size should I choose?

There is 5 cm between them in width and 3 cm in depth, so it is largely about the space. The medium at 40 x 40 cm suits a living room corner or the base of a wardrobe; the small at 35 x 35 cm fits a narrower gap or a shelf below a console.

How do I clean it?

Dust it with a dry brush or the soft attachment on a vacuum. Water hyacinth is a dried plant fibre, so keep it out of standing damp and wipe spills rather than washing it.
