This antique wash wicker rectangular garden trug is a shallow, hessian lined willow basket with an arched handle, in three sizes or as a set of all three. The small measures 35 x 19 x 10 cm and 22 cm to the top of the handle, at 400 g; the medium is 41 x 24 x 12 cm at 500 g; the large is 48 x 30 x 14 cm, 31 cm to the handle, at 700 g. It is for cut flowers, herbs, vegetables and small harvests.

This is the compact trug in our range, and the width is what makes it so. At 19 to 30 cm across it carries flat against the hip going down a path and sits on a windowsill or a potting bench without taking the whole surface, and the small at 35 cm long is genuinely a one-handed basket. Square corners and straight sides use the full footprint, so cut stems lie in rows rather than fanning out across a curve, and tools sit flat instead of sliding into the middle. The hessian lining takes the soil and lifts out to be shaken off.

Which size should I choose?

The small at 35 x 19 cm is a herb and cut-flower basket, and the easiest to carry one-handed while you work with the other. The medium is the general-purpose size. The large at 48 x 30 cm takes a proper picking and is still narrow enough to go down a path without catching on borders.

How does it compare with your oval garden trug?

The oval trug is bigger in every direction, 43 to 54.5 cm long and up to 36.5 cm across, with a little more depth. This rectangular one is narrower and lighter, and the square corners suit stems and tools laid in rows. Both are antique wash willow with a hessian lining.

Can I carry hand tools in it?

Yes, for secateurs, twine, gloves and seed packets. It is a woven basket rather than a toolbox, so let anything with an edge sit on top of the hessian rather than working its way into the weave.

Will it take being used outdoors?

It is built for garden work and will handle dry weather and the odd shower. What it will not take is being stored damp, so bring it under cover and let it dry out rather than leaving it standing in a wet shed.
