Hessian Basket FAQs
Hessian fabric is made most commonly from woven fabrics taken from the skin of a jute plant. This versatile fabric is breathable, robust, and strong, making it traditionally ideal for products like shipment sacks for vegetables and tobacco.
Hessian is considered incredibly environmentally friendly because it is made from jute which is a natural fibre. It is also completely biodegradable so reduces landfill waste if and when disposed of.
In many parts of Europe, this material is known as hessian. This name originates from a group of German soldiers from the state of Hesse, who famously wore uniforms made from natural hessian. Nicknamed the "Hessians," their name has since become synonymous with the fabric across Europe.
This fabric is known as hessian widely across Europe, but you may have also heard it called ‘burlap’ from natives in America and Canada.
To maintain your hessian basket, we recommend that you use a hoover to remove any dust or dirt residue, particularly if you have one of our log baskets.
It's important to dry out your hessian baskets if they get wet as hessian can harbour mould, although this is very uncommon.
