What Is Hessian?
Hessian fabric is made most commonly from woven fabrics taken from the skin of a jute plant. This fabric is very versatile, holding qualities such as being breathable, robust and strong, this is why it’s traditionally used for products such as shipment sacks for products such as vegetables and tobacco.
Is Hessian Eco-Friendly?
Hessian is considered incredibly environmentally friendly because it is made from jute which is a natural fibre. It is also completely biodegradable so reduces landfill waste if and when disposed of.
Why Is It Called Hessian?
In many parts of Europe this material is known as hessian, this is because there was a group of German soldiers from the state of Hesse who famously wore uniforms made from natural hessian. They were nicknamed the ‘Hessians’ and the name has stuck for the fabric across Europe.
What Is Another Name for Hessian?
This fabric is known as hessian widely across Europe, but you may have also heard it called ‘burlap’ from natives in America and Canada.
How Do You Clean Hessian Baskets?
To clean your hessian basket it's best to hoover to collect any dust or dirt left behind, especially if you have one of our log baskets. It's important to dry out your hessian baskets if they get wet as hessian can harbour mould, although this is very uncommon.
