This square water hyacinth storage basket is a deep bordered basket, woven in water hyacinth and edged at the top with grey twisted paper, in two sizes or as a set of both. The small measures 35 x 35 x 29 cm at 1.3 kg and the large is 40 x 40 x 32 cm at 1.7 kg. Handles are set into the sides, and the depth suits blankets, throws, laundry, toys or shoes.

A deep square basket can read as one solid block of weave, and the grey rim is what breaks it up. It draws a horizontal line across the top of a 29 to 32 cm wall of hyacinth, which gives the eye somewhere to land and makes the opening obvious from across a room. The square itself is held by a metal frame inside the weave, and that is what keeps the corners sharp enough to push the basket into a corner of a room and use the whole of its footprint rather than losing the edges to a curve.

What is the grey border?

A paper cord, twisted and coloured grey, wound in at the rim as the basket is finished. It sits flush with the weave rather than standing proud of it.

Is this the same as your plain square hyacinth basket?

Same footprints, same depths, same material. The difference is the grey edging at the top, so it comes down to which finish you want in the room.

Which of the two sizes do I want?

There is 5 cm between them each way and 3 cm in height, so it is usually the space that decides. The large at 40 x 40 cm holds a folded duvet or a full basket of throws. The small at 35 x 35 cm fits a narrower alcove or the base of a wardrobe.

Can I use it for laundry?

For dry washing and towels, yes. It is a dried plant fibre, so keep damp clothes out of it, and if anything wet goes in, empty it and let the basket dry in the air.
