The name comes from the rim, which dips at the front and lifts at the back, so you reach in over a low side rather than a full height wall. Split willow, halved lengthways before weaving, leaves a flatter face under the antique wash. A hessian lining drops in and folds over the rim. Three sizes, or all three as a set.

Logs are the main job, the largest for a hearth and the smallest for kindling. Away from a fire they take folded linen, spare pillows or craft supplies. The hessian pulls out to be shaken down.

Why are two heights given for each size?

The rim is not level. It scoops down at the front and lifts at the back, so the small stands 30 cm at its lowest point and 34 cm at its highest. The bracketed figure is the top of the handle.

Which size suits a fireplace?

The large, on a 35 x 28 cm base, is the one people buy for a hearth. The medium works beside a smaller stove, and the small is better used for kindling or firelighters.

Is the hessian fixed in place?

No, it is loose. It drops in and folds over the rim, so you can take it out to shake it down and put it back the same way.

Can I stand one right next to a wood burner?

Willow is unsealed and it will dry out and fade in constant heat. Keep it off the hearthstone and out of direct heat, and it will last a great deal longer.
