This log basket is a jumbo antique wash willow basket, 76 x 44 x 52 cm and 4.7 kg, lined in hessian and lifted by rope handles at both ends. A wheeled version stands 57 cm and weighs 5.1 kg. It holds logs, kindling, newspapers and folded blankets beside a hearth.

The floor and sides are lined in hessian, a coarser cloth than the cotton we line storage baskets with, and it keeps bark, dust and splinters off the hearth rug. The wheeled version is the same basket 5 cm taller and 400 g heavier, which matters when the thing is full: a loaded log basket rolls rather than being dragged.

Wheels or no wheels?

Wheels if the basket moves, either because you fill it at a log store and bring it in, or because the hearth gets swept round. Without them it sits 5 cm lower and 400 g lighter, which is the better choice if it lives in one spot.

How much wood does it take?

We have not put a log count on it, because that depends entirely on how your wood is cut and how you stack it. The internal space is 76 x 44 cm and 52 cm deep, so measure a few of your own logs against that and you will have a better answer than we can give.

What does the hessian lining do?

It sits between the wood and the weave, so bark, dust and loose splinters stay in the basket instead of working their way out onto the floor. It is a working liner rather than a decorative one.

Can it live outside by the wood store?

Not somewhere it gets rained on. Willow left wet will grey off and eventually soften, and the hessian holds damp against it. A porch, a garage or an indoor hearth is where this one belongs.
