This antique wash wicker stumpy basket is a low, wide hessian lined willow log basket in two sizes, or as a set of both. The small measures 35 cm across the belly and 23 cm high at 600 g; the large is 43 cm across and 31 cm high at 1 kg. Both hold logs and kindling by a fire, and take throws, cushions, yarn or magazines just as happily.

Stumpy is an accurate name. The body bulges out at the centre and pulls back in at the rim, so it holds a good deal more than its height suggests, the weight sits low enough that it will not tip when you reach in, and a stack of logs stays contained instead of spilling over the edge. The small is 35 cm across the belly and takes an evening's logs, so it suits a tight alcove or the side of a chair. The large is 43 cm across and 31 cm deep, the better everyday choice for an open fire and the more useful one for blankets. The set gives you both, and they sit well together at different heights.

Will it go under a console table?

Usually. The small is 23 cm to the rim, the large 31 cm, and the handle adds 7 cm to each. Measure the clear height under yours and work from the handle figure if it needs to slide right under.

Where does the name come from?

From the profile. It is wide and low rather than tall, with the widest point at the middle, which gives it a squat shape and more room inside than the measurements imply.

How should I look after it?

Dry and indoors, willow lasts decades. Brush the hessian out when debris collects and take a dry brush to the willow now and then. The finish will pale slightly with age, which is the material doing what willow does.
