This round lined straight-sided wicker basket is a hessian lined willow log and storage basket in two sizes, or both together as a pair. The medium is 36 cm across and 30 cm deep, 36 cm to the top of the handles, at 1.1 kg; the large is 42 cm across and 34 cm deep, 40 cm to the handles, at 1.3 kg. It holds logs and kindling beside a stove, laundry in a bathroom, or a potted plant in a living room.

Round baskets usually narrow towards the base. These do not, and that is the whole point of them: the sides drop straight down, so the basket is as wide at the bottom as it is at the rim and the full 36 or 42 cm is usable all the way through. Logs stack rather than wedging into a taper, a plant pot gets a flat base wide enough to stand square on, and when the basket is empty the medium drops inside the large for storage. The hessian lining takes the bark, grit and soil that would otherwise work into the weave.

Which size should I choose?

Six centimetres separate them across and four in depth. The medium at 36 cm is the one for a hearth in a normal sitting room or a bathroom corner. The large at 42 cm is the better log basket if you are burning all evening, and the more useful size for laundry. The pair gives you one of each, and they store one inside the other in summer.

Can I stand a plant in it?

You can stand one in it, and the flat base and straight sides are what make that work where a tapered basket wobbles. There is no waterproof layer, so keep the plant in its own pot with a saucer underneath rather than planting into the basket.

What difference do straight sides actually make?

Usable volume. On a tapered basket the bottom third is narrower than the opening, so the space you can see is not the space you get. Here the diameter is the same top to bottom.

Can the lining be taken out?

Yes. Lift it out, shake it down outside and put it back. A damp cloth handles any marks on the willow itself.
