This wicker kitchen storage basket is a wide, shallow buff willow basket with handles cut into the sides, in three sizes or as a set of all three. The small measures 43 x 33 x 18 cm on a 37 x 28 cm base at 600 g, the medium 48 x 38 x 20 cm on a 43 x 32 cm base at 700 g, and the large 52 x 44 x 22 cm on a 50 x 39 cm base at 900 g. It suits worktops, larder shelves and open kitchen shelving.

We publish the base measurements alongside the rim on this one, because the base is the number that actually decides what fits. The small opens at 43 x 33 cm but sits on a 37 x 28 cm base, so anything rigid going in flat, a tray, a baking sheet, a stack of magazines, has to be measured against the base rather than the opening. Beyond that, the shape is the appeal: wide and only 18 to 22 cm deep, so the contents lie in one layer where you can see them instead of stacking up and being forgotten about at the bottom, which is what happens to a deep basket in a kitchen.

Why do you list the base as well as the top?

Because the sides taper slightly, so the opening is always a little larger than the floor of the basket. If you are putting something rigid and flat inside, measure it against the base figure. For loose contents the top measurement is the one that matters.

Will it fit a kitchen cupboard?

The three run 33, 38 and 44 cm front to back. A standard 30 cm wall unit will not take any of them, so these are baskets for a base unit, a larder shelf, a worktop or open shelving.

Which size should I choose?

Five centimetres separate each size in length and around 5 cm in width. The small is a worktop basket. The medium is the general-purpose one. The large at 52 x 44 cm is a shelf basket that holds a proper amount, and the set of three suits a graded run.

Can I put food in it?

Bread, fruit, vegetables and anything packaged go straight in. It is unlined willow, so use a cloth for anything loose or damp, and keep raw food out of it.
