This seagrass storage hamper is a lidded basket woven in seagrass over a green metal frame, in four sizes or as a set of all four. The mini measures 24 x 16 x 12 cm at 400 g, the small 28 x 20 x 14 cm at 700 g, the medium 32 x 24 x 15 cm at 900 g, and the large 36 x 28 x 18 cm at 1 kg. Gaps worked into each end serve as handles.

Lids on baskets this small are rarer than they should be. Anything between 24 and 36 cm long is destined for a shelf, a cupboard or the space under a console table, which is exactly where dust settles on whatever is inside, and a hinged lid closes that off without adding any bulk to the outside. The frame underneath is metal, painted green, and it is what keeps the hamper rectangular after it has been opened and shut a few hundred times rather than letting the corners soften. Which size should I choose?

They are all small, so it is usually the shelf that decides rather than the contents. The mini at 24 x 16 cm takes cables, chargers and stationery. The large at 36 x 28 cm is the one for folded scarves, craft materials or paperwork. The set of four gives a graded run.

How does it differ from your seagrass storage baskets?

Those are open-topped and larger, 36 to 48 cm long. These are lidded and smaller, 24 to 36 cm. Same fibre, different job: one is for the things you reach into daily, the other for the things you would rather have shut away.

Can you see the metal frame?

No. The seagrass is woven over it, so the frame is what gives the hamper its shape rather than something on show. The green paint is there for the parts that would otherwise show through the weave.

How do I keep it clean?

A dry brush or a vacuum on low lifts dust out of the weave. Seagrass is a dried fibre, so wipe spills rather than washing it, and keep it out of standing damp.
