This double steamed wicker storage tray is a shallow willow tray in three sizes, unlined or with a removable white cotton lining. The small measures 32 x 21 x 7.5 cm at 150 g, the medium 35 x 25 x 8 cm at 250 g and the large 39 x 30 x 10 cm at 400 g. The depth, or lack of it, is the point.

Under 10 cm deep, nothing disappears to the bottom, which is what makes these work in a drawer, on a worktop holding condiments, or on a dressing table where you want everything in sight at once. The double steamed colour is dark enough to sit against oak and walnut without reading as rustic.

What does double steamed actually mean?

The willow is steamed twice with the bark still on before it is woven. That draws the tannins into the rod and darkens it right through, so the colour is in the wood rather than applied to the surface, and a scuff does not reveal a paler layer underneath.

Will it fit in a kitchen drawer?

The small is 32 x 21 cm and 7.5 cm deep, which suits a standard drawer; the large at 39 x 30 x 10 cm is more of a worktop or shelf tray. Measure the drawer interior rather than the front panel.

What is the difference between the lined and unlined trays?

The lined version has a removable white cotton lining, which covers the weave and stops small items catching. On the small size the lining also brings the internal depth down, from 7.5 cm to 6 cm.

Can I use it for food?

For wrapped and whole items, yes. Bare willow is not a surface for anything unwrapped and damp, so use the lined version or a cloth if you are serving bread or fruit directly.
