This antique wash wicker open end basket is a hessian lined willow log basket with a cut-away front, made for loading from the side rather than lifting over a rim. It measures 42 x 32 cm, rises from 12 cm at the front to 32 cm at the back, stands 42 cm to the top of the handle and weighs 1.3 kg. It suits logs and kindling beside a stove, and anything else you want visible and within reach.

That cutaway is the entire design. Logs slide in over a 12 cm edge, which is the difference between a basket you can fill with an armful from the log store and one that needs a free hand, and you can see what is left without getting out of a chair. The hessian lining runs down to the low front edge, which is where bark drags across and where an unlined basket frays first.

How much floor space does it need?

42 x 32 cm, near enough a large shoebox laid flat. Measure the clear space beside your hearth first, and note the handle takes overall height to 42 cm even though the basket itself is 32 cm at the back.

Why is the front lower than the back?

To let you load from the side. Getting logs over a 32 cm rim with both arms full is awkward. Sliding them over a 12 cm edge is not. The low front also lets you see how much is left at a glance.

Will it tip forward when loaded?

No. The base covers the full 42 x 32 cm footprint and the weight sits low and towards the tall back. The basket weighs 1.3 kg on its own.

Is it only for logs?

The open front suits anything you want visible and to hand: newspapers and magazines beside a chair, tins in a pantry, post by a front door, shoes in a hallway.
