This garden trug is a shallow light steamed willow basket, 44 x 32 cm, with sides of 6 cm at the ends rising to 12 cm through the middle. It weighs 500 g and stands 26 cm to the top of its woven willow arc handle. It takes cut flowers, herbs, vegetables and weeding.

A trug is shallow on purpose. Cut stems laid flat across 44 cm keep their length instead of bending against a basket wall, and the rise to 12 cm through the centre gives the depth that holds soil, roots or a handful of tools. At 500 g it can be carried loaded in one hand with the other free to cut.

Why are the sides so low?

So that what you cut can lie down. Roses, dahlias and long-stemmed herbs are damaged where they fold over a rim, and at 6 cm there is nothing to fold them over. The deeper middle is there for the things that do need holding in.

Can it be left outside?

We would not leave it out. The willow is unsealed, so rain soaks in and repeated wetting and drying will shorten its life. Knock the soil out, let it dry somewhere airy and it will keep its shape for years.

Is the handle strong enough when it is full?

The handle is one arc of willow woven through the body, not a piece pinned or screwed on afterwards, so there is no joint to work loose. The basket itself is 500 g, which leaves most of what you are lifting as the load.

Does it work indoors?

Plenty of ours never see a garden. The flat 44 x 32 cm floor suits a hall table for post and keys, or a kitchen worktop for onions and garlic, and it wipes clean when it needs it.
