This antique wash umbrella stand is a willow stand with a hessian lining and in-built handles, in two sizes. The small is 26 cm across the top on a 21 cm base and 44 cm tall at 800 g; the large is 32.5 cm across on a 27 cm base and 51.5 cm tall at 1.1 kg. It takes umbrellas, walking sticks and canes.

The hessian lining is the working part of an umbrella stand. A wet umbrella drips, and bare willow standing in water goes soft; the lining holds the drips. Both sizes taper, 5 cm narrower at the base than the top.

Which size should I choose?

The large at 32.5 cm across and 51.5 cm tall holds a full-length umbrella upright and takes several at once. The small at 26 cm and 44 cm suits a narrow hallway, or walking sticks and folding umbrellas rather than golf umbrellas.

Will a wet umbrella damage it?

That is what the hessian lining is for. It sits between the willow and the water. Tip the stand out and let it dry if a lot of water collects, rather than leaving it standing.

Will it tip over?

Both sizes are narrower at the base than the top, so weight sits over the centre. At 800 g and 1.1 kg empty they rely on their contents for ballast, so an empty stand is easier to knock than a full one.

Can it be used for anything else?

People use them for rolled blankets, wrapping paper, garden canes and fishing rods. The lining makes it more forgiving of anything damp than a plain basket would be.
