Oval, lidded and woven in full antique wash willow, this creel has grey faux leather fittings, a metal clasp and a grey canvas shoulder strap a metre long. The lid is cut with a hole, as a working creel always was, so a catch could be dropped in without opening the basket.

The front sits lower than the back, so the creel holds flat against a hip instead of swinging, and the strap leaves both hands free. Only one size is made. It goes out now for picnics, day trips and market shopping as much as for fishing.

What is the hole in the lid for?

Traditionally, for putting a catch in without opening the creel. These days most people use it for a bottle, which stands through it with the neck showing.

Will a wine bottle fit through it?

A standard bottle does. Wider bottles, champagne in particular, may not, so measure the neck and shoulder of yours before counting on it.

How does it differ from your double steamed fishing creel?

Finish and fittings. That one is double steamed, a deeper brown, while this is antique wash with grey faux leather and a grey canvas strap. Both follow the same traditional shape.

Does it work as a day bag?

That is what most of them end up doing. The strap is a full metre of canvas, the lid clasps shut, and at 28 x 25 cm it takes a book, a flask and lunch without looking like luggage.
