A liner puts a barrier between damp and the board, which is why the lined one works as a windowsill planter for pots and herbs. It will catch a small spill, but it is fitted rather than sealed at the corners, so do not fill it on purpose. Bare, the same tray takes kitchen bottles or desk clutter.

Why line a tray at all?

It puts a barrier between damp and the wood, so a plant pot that drips or a bottle that sweats does not sit straight on the board.

Is the unlined tray the same size?

Yes. Both are 31.5 x 21 cm and 300 g, so the only thing you gain with the lined version is the liner.

Will it hold water if a pot leaks?

It will catch a small amount. We have not tested it as a watertight tray and we would not fill it deliberately, because the liner is fitted rather than sealed at the corners.
