This antique wash wicker log basket is a hessian lined willow basket in three sizes, or all three together as a set, with a carrying handle at each end. The small measures 35 x 25 x 28 cm and 33 cm to the top of the handle, at 800 g; the medium is 40 x 30 x 32 cm at 1.1 kg; the large runs to 46 x 35 x 36 cm, 43 cm to the handle, at 1.5 kg. It takes logs, kindling and firewood beside a stove or open fire.

Most log baskets are long and low. This one is the other way round: at 28, 32 and 36 cm the sides come up higher than the basket is wide, so logs can be stood on end rather than laid flat, and a useful load goes into a narrow footprint. That is the basket to reach for when the gap beside the hearth is 30 cm and no more. The hessian is the hardest wearing lining we fit, which is why it goes on the log baskets: bark, grit and wood dust stay inside rather than working through the weave onto the floor.

Which size should I choose?

Measure the gap first, because the widths are what separate them: 25, 30 and 35 cm. The small at 35 x 25 cm is the one for a narrow space beside a stove and holds enough for an evening. The medium is the general-purpose size. The large at 46 x 35 cm is a top-up store you fill from the wood pile once and draw on for a few days. The set gives you a small by the fire and a large kept back.

How does this differ from your other antique wash log basket?

Proportions. This one stands taller than it is wide and comes in three sizes, so it takes less floor. The other is longer and lower, 47 to 55 cm across, with the handles cut into the sides so nothing sticks out, which suits a basket pushed flush against a chimney breast.

What does the hessian lining actually do?

It puts a solid layer between the wood and the weave, so the bark and grit that come off logs stay in the basket. Lift it out and shake it down outside when it gets dusty.

Can I use it for something other than logs?
