More willow goes into it. Weight tracks how much material is in a basket, and at 3.4 kg empty there is a good deal of it in this one. Density and weave tightness are what resist bowing.

Does 49 cm include the handles?

It is the height to the rim. The handles are interwoven there rather than arched over the top, so there is nothing standing above the 49 cm figure.

Will it hold umbrellas and walking sticks?

Yes. The 49 cm depth and the 32 cm base keep tall items upright. Shake out any water before they go in: willow is unsealed and should stay dry.
