This split willow round tray measures 35 cm across the rim, 25 cm across the base and 10 cm deep, and weighs 200 g. It is woven from split buff willow, and holds fruit on a kitchen worktop or keys and post in a hallway.

Split willow is a whole rod cut lengthways before weaving, which lays a flat face outward and gives the surface a banded look. The rim sits 10 cm wider than the base, so the walls flare outward.

What does splitting the willow change?

A willow rod cut down its length into two or more strips. The weaver uses the strip instead of the whole rod, which gives a flatter, wider band and a lighter basket for the same size.

How does it compare with your round straight-sided trays?

Those hold the same width top to bottom and are woven from whole rods. This one flares from a 25 cm base to a 35 cm rim and is split, which makes it lighter and more open in the hand.

Can I put unwrapped food on it?

We do not hold food contact certification for it, so we do not sell it as food safe. A cloth, a wooden board or a paper wrap under the food solves it.

Will the flared shape make it tip?

The 25 cm base is wide relative to the 10 cm height, so it sits low and stable. Loading one side heavily is the only way to unbalance it.
