This antique wash wicker garden trug is a shallow, hessian lined willow basket with a fixed arched handle, in three sizes or as a set of all three. The small measures 43 x 25 x 11 cm and 24 cm to the top of the handle, at 400 g; the medium is 49 x 31 x 13 cm at 600 g; the large is 54.5 x 36.5 x 16 cm, 30 cm to the handle, at 800 g. It is made for carrying cut flowers, herbs and vegetables in from the garden, and holds its own indoors as a display basket.

A trug is shallow for a reason. At 11 to 16 cm deep, cut stems and freshly picked vegetables lie along the basket rather than piling up on top of each other, which is the difference between bringing produce in and bringing bruised produce in. The handle stands 13 to 14 cm clear of the rim, so there is room to get a gloved hand through it with the trug full. The hessian lining is the practical part: soil, grit and leaf debris stay on the fabric and shake out, rather than working down into the weave where they are awkward to get at.

Which size should I choose?

The medium at 49 x 31 cm is the one most people want, big enough for an armful of cut flowers or a morning's picking without being unwieldy on the arm. The small at 43 x 25 cm suits herbs, salad and a small plot. The large at 54.5 x 36.5 cm is for a productive vegetable garden and gets heavy when full, so take the weight into account.

Can I leave it outside?

It is a garden basket rather than garden furniture. Willow is fine out in dry weather and will survive a shower, but bring it in afterwards and let it dry properly. Left out in the rain or stood in a damp shed it will not last.

What does the hessian lining do?

It keeps soil and plant debris out of the weave. Lift it out, shake it down outside, and put it back. Without it, grit works into the willow and stays there.

Does it work indoors?

Yes. The low sides make it a display basket as much as a working one: bread and fruit on a table, folded tea towels on a worktop, or dried flowers on a shelf.
