This rope handled rattan round planter is a Kubu grey rattan basket with a plastic liner and a rope handle at each side, in two sizes or as a pair. The medium is 45 cm across and 39 cm tall at 2.5 kg; the large is 55 cm across and 45 cm tall at 3.9 kg. It is sized for large houseplants standing on the floor.

These are big enough to take a plant that has outgrown everything else in the house. At 45 or 55 cm across and 39 to 45 cm deep, a full-size nursery pot drops straight in and disappears below the rim, which is the whole trick: the plant looks planted rather than potted. The plastic liner deals with what comes next, because watering something that size means drips, and the liner keeps them off the floorboards. The rope handles are looped at each side rather than woven into the rim, so a loaded planter can be shifted across a room instead of dragged.

Can I plant straight into it?

No. Keep the plant in its own pot and stand that inside. The liner is there to catch drips when you water, not to hold soil or sit in standing water.

Which size do I need?

Measure the pot your plant is currently in and compare it with the 45 cm and 55 cm across the top, allowing a couple of centimetres so it lifts in and out easily. Depth matters too: at 39 and 45 cm, a tall nursery pot will sit below the rim rather than showing above it.

Can it go outside?

On a covered porch or a conservatory, yes. Rattan is not weatherproof, so a planter left out in the rain will not last, and standing water underneath it will do the base no good at all.

Does it have to hold a plant?

No. A 55 cm round basket with rope handles works just as well for throws in a living room, toys in a corner, or logs beside a stove. The liner simply stops anything working through the weave.
