This oak effect wooden trug is a rigid wooden trug with a fixed handle, in three sizes or as a set of all three. The small measures 27 x 14 x 10 cm and 20 cm to the top of the handle, at 200 g; the medium is 33 x 20 x 13 cm at 400 g; the large is 38 x 26 x 16 cm, 30 cm to the handle, at 700 g. It suits cut flowers, herbs, seed packets and table display.

Every other trug we make is woven, and this one is not, which is the whole reason to choose it. A woven basket gives soil and grit somewhere to lodge; solid wooden sides wipe down with a cloth, so this comes back in from the garden clean rather than needing to be turned upside down and shaken out. It is also the lightest trug in the range, 200 g for the small, and the oak effect finish means it can stay on a kitchen table between jobs without looking like garden kit that has been brought indoors and forgotten about.

Which size should I choose?

The small at 27 x 14 cm is a herb and cut-flower trug and genuinely one-handed. The medium is the general-purpose size. The large at 38 x 26 cm takes a decent picking, and the set of three makes a graded display on a shelf or a dresser.

Why wood rather than willow?

Cleaning, mostly. Solid sides have nowhere for soil to work into, so a wipe with a cloth sorts it out. A woven trug has the advantage in looks and lightness; this one has it in practicality.

Can it get wet?

Wipe it down rather than washing it, and do not leave it standing out in the rain. It is finished wood rather than sealed timber, so water left sitting on it will lift the finish over time.

Can I plant into it?

No. It is not waterproof and it has no drainage, so keep plants in their own pots and stand those inside. For carrying, potting up and displaying it is exactly right.
