What is jute?

A plant fibre, spun into twine. It is the same family of material as hessian, which is why it looks and feels of a piece with our hessian lined baskets.

Will it rot if I leave it outside?

Eventually, yes, and on a compost heap that is the point. On a plant support it holds for a growing season. If you need something that lasts years outdoors, this is the wrong string.

Is it strong enough to stake a plant?

For tying in beans, tomatoes, sweet peas and climbers, yes. For anything that needs real load bearing, use a proper garden tie rather than twine.

Can I use it for gift wrapping?

A lot of it goes out for exactly that. The natural colour sits well against kraft paper and willow, and it knots and frays neatly rather than slipping.
