Antique Wash Wicker Harvesting Basket with Hessian Lining
This antique wash wicker harvesting basket is a long, shallow willow basket with a hessian lining and an arched handle, in two sizes or as a pair. The small is 47 x 23 cm with sides dropping from 16 cm at the ends to 9 cm in the middle, at 400 g. The large is 59 x 30 cm, 19 cm down to 10 cm, at 700 g.
A harvesting basket sits high at the ends and low through the middle so long stems lie across it without the rim pressing into them: leeks, rhubarb, beans, cut flowers. The raised ends stop any of it sliding out. The hessian lining catches the soil that comes in with the crop.

Which size should I choose?
The large at 59 x 30 cm is the one for a working vegetable plot, and the extra 12 cm of length matters when what you are carrying is long. The small at 47 x 23 cm suits herbs, salad, soft fruit and cutting flowers, and is easier to hold on one arm while you work with the other hand. The pair covers both jobs.
How is this different from your garden trugs?
The profile. Our trugs have sides of an even height all the way round, which suits bulk. This one dips through the middle specifically so that long stems and stalks can lie across it, and it is longer and narrower than any of them.
Can I use it indoors?
It makes a good table basket, and the low middle shows off what is in it rather than hiding it. Bread, fruit, dried flowers or napkins all suit it.
How should I care for it?
Lift the hessian out and shake the soil off outdoors after a day's picking. Willow will take being out in dry weather but should not be stored damp, so let it dry off properly before it goes back in the shed.
