This water hyacinth storage basket with heart cut-out handles is a small woven basket on a metal frame, with a heart-shaped hand hold cut into each face, in two sizes or as a pair. The small measures 30 x 20 x 14 cm at 500 g and the large is 35 x 25 x 15 cm at 600 g. It suits shelves, worktops and open storage in a living room, bedroom, bathroom or child's room.

The hearts are hand holds rather than decoration, and having one on every face is the part that earns its keep. On a shelf or in a cube unit you can usually only reach the side pointing out at you, so a basket with a handle on all four sides can always be pulled forward whichever way round it ended up. They are worked into the weave as the basket is made rather than added on afterwards. The frame underneath is metal, which is what keeps the shape square whether the basket is full or empty, and the two sizes sit inside one another when only one is wanted.

Why is there a handle on every side?

So the basket can be pulled out of a shelf or a cupboard from whichever side happens to be facing you. On a basket with one handle, the day it goes back the wrong way round is the day it becomes awkward.

Which size should I choose?

Five centimetres separate them each way and one in height, so it comes down to the shelf. The small at 30 x 20 cm fits a narrow shelf or a bathroom windowsill; the large at 35 x 25 cm is the more generally useful of the two. The pair works well one in front of the other, or one on each of two shelves.

Do the cut-outs weaken it?

The weave is built onto a metal frame, and that is what carries the shape. The hand holds are formed as part of the weaving rather than cut out of a finished basket.

How do I keep it clean?

A dry brush or a vacuum on low gets dust out of the weave. Water hyacinth is a dried plant fibre, so wipe spills rather than washing the basket, and keep it away from standing damp.
