This water hyacinth napkin holder is woven onto a metal frame, with a hinged metal weight that drops onto the napkins and holds them flat. It is 19.5 cm long, 19 cm wide and 7 cm tall, at 300 g. It sits on a dining table or a worktop as a table napkin holder.

Water hyacinth is a freshwater plant. Its stems are dried and plaited flat, so the strands here are wider than the twisted cord on our seagrass holder. Three versions share one set of dimensions, and the antique wash willow one is lightest at 200 g.

Where does water hyacinth come from?

A floating freshwater plant with thick hollow stems. The stems are harvested, dried until they flatten, then plaited into the broad strands you can see across the face of this holder.

Is the plaited strand more fragile than willow?

It behaves differently rather than worse. Hyacinth is softer under a fingernail and will fray at a cut end, where willow splinters. Neither likes being left damp.

Can I wipe it clean?

A barely damp cloth over the top, then dry it straight away. Do not run it under a tap: the plait holds water in its folds and takes days to dry through.

Is it the same holder as your seagrass one?

Same frame, same hinged weight, same 19.5 x 19 x 7 cm and same 300 g. The material is the whole difference, and hyacinth reads warmer and broader in the weave.
