This grey scandi storage basket is a grey wash willow basket built with flat chipwood panels, in four sizes or as a set of all four, unlined or with a removable white cotton lining. The small measures 33 x 21 x 17 cm at 400 g unlined, the medium 38 x 26 x 19 cm, the large 43 x 30 x 22 cm, and the extra-large 47 x 35 x 24 cm at 900 g. It suits shelves, sideboards and open storage in any room of the house.

The chipwood is what gives these their Scandinavian look and sets them apart from the rest of our willow. Flat panels of wood are built into the weave rather than the whole basket being woven, so the sides read as clean planes instead of texture, and the basket stays remarkably light: even the extra-large is under a kilogram unlined. The four sizes step up by only 4 or 5 cm at a time, which is the usual reason people take the set rather than a single basket, because a graded run of four along one shelf looks deliberate in a way that two mismatched baskets never do.

Which size should I choose?

Measure the shelf depth first, because that is what rules out sizes: the four run 21, 26, 30 and 35 cm front to back. The small and medium suit most shelf units and cupboards. The large and extra-large want a deeper shelf or the floor. Heights only vary from 17 to 24 cm, so clearance above is rarely the problem.

Lined or unlined?

Unlined shows the weave and the chipwood panels, which is the look most people are after. The lining is worth taking if the basket is holding clothes or anything that might snag, and it lifts out to be washed. It adds between 100 g and 200 g.

What is chipwood?

Thin sheets of wood shaved from a log and used flat rather than woven as rods. It is the same material as a traditional chipwood shopping basket, and here it is what gives the sides their smooth panelled faces.

Will they sit flat on a shelf?

Yes. The base is flat rather than curved, so the baskets stand square on a shelf or a worktop rather than rocking, and they slide in and out without catching.
