Seagrass or split willow, given the sizes are identical?

Seagrass is firmer, greener when new and heavier: 500 g against 200 g on the medium. Split willow is lighter to lift down from a shelf and warmer in colour. The footprints and depths are the same either way.

Which size takes a stack of magazines?

The large at 39 x 25.5 cm holds A4 flat with room to lift them out. The medium at 34 x 20.5 cm is short for A4 and better suited to paperbacks or post.

What does the taper actually do?

The sides are woven on a taper. It means the trays sit in a smaller footprint than their rim suggests, and it is what lets you see everything in the tray from above.

Can it hold food?

Not loose food. Seagrass is unsealed and untreated for food contact. Bread in a bag, wrapped produce or fruit on a cloth is fine.
