This grey rattan market basket is a lightweight wicker shopping basket, hand-woven from kubu rattan with a fixed handle over the top. It measures 54 x 40 cm with a 52 x 40 cm opening, stands 34 cm to the top of the handle, weighs 1.3 kg empty, and carries groceries, cut flowers, picnic kit or laundry.

A basket like this lives or dies on its opening. The 52 x 40 cm top narrows towards the base, so a full shop sits up where you can see and reach it rather than wedging into the bottom corners. Kubu rattan is soaked and dried before weaving, which is where the soft grey comes from and most of the spring in it. The sides stay put when you lift it loaded, which is the moment a cheap basket bows outwards and starts working its handle loose.

Is it big enough for a weekly shop?

For most people, yes. The opening is 52 x 40 cm and the basket is 24 cm deep, which works out at roughly the volume of two large shopping bags. In practice that is a full trip to a market or a farm shop, or the fresh half of a supermarket run. It is a wide, shallow basket rather than a deep one, so bulky items like bread and greens travel better in it than tins.

Should I choose lined or unlined?

Unlined is lighter and easier to shake out, which covers most shopping and general carrying. Take the Cordura lining if you are carrying produce, damp flowers or anything likely to mark the weave, since it wipes down.

Is it comfortable to carry when full?

The handle sits 34 cm above the base, high enough to hook over a forearm and still have a hand free for a door or a car boot. At 1.3 kg the basket itself adds very little to what you are carrying, and the sides hold their shape rather than splaying under the load.
