Will it sit flat against a skirting board?

The corners are square and the sides run close to straight, so it will sit back further than a curved basket. Allow a centimetre or two for the weave.

How much space does the handle need above it?

Six centimetres. The body is 40 cm tall and the measurement to the top of the handle is 46 cm, so check any shelf you plan to slide it under.

Should I take this or the oval one?

Take this for a wall, an alcove or a corner. Take the oval Small Oval Log Basket if the basket will stand in the open, where the curve reads softer.

Is the base woven or solid?
