This wheeled rattan log basket is a hessian lined Kubu rattan basket built on a solid wooden base with four castors, in two sizes. The small measures 64 x 41 x 50 cm, or 60 cm to the top of the handles, at 1.6 kg; the large is 76 x 47 x 57 cm, 65 cm to the handles, at 6.2 kg. Both are made to hold logs, kindling and firewood beside a stove or open fire.

A basket this size, loaded with wood, is not something you want to be lifting, and that is the case for the wheels. Four castors on a wooden base mean it rolls from the wood store to the hearth and back instead of being carried, and the solid base keeps the weight off the weave rather than dragging rattan across a floor. The side handles are woven into the body rather than fixed on, so there is something to steer by. Inside, the hessian lining takes the bark, grit and dust that come off logs; on the large it is made from recycled coffee sacks.

How much wood does it hold?

These are the largest log baskets we make. The small gives you 64 x 41 cm of floor and 50 cm of depth; the large 76 x 47 cm and 57 cm deep. How many evenings that covers depends entirely on what you burn and how hard, but both are stores rather than single-load baskets, which is why they are on wheels.

Will the castors mark my floor?

They roll rather than drag, which is the main thing. As with any castor, it is grit picked up off a hearth that does the damage, so brush the wheels off now and then.

What is the lining made from?

Hessian, and on the large size it is hessian woven from recycled coffee sacks. It sits between the wood and the rattan so bark and grit stay in the basket.

Can I use it for something other than logs?

Yes. It is a large wheeled basket, so it works for blankets and throws in a living room, toys in a playroom, or recycling and newspapers in a utility. The wheels are just as useful when what is inside is bulky rather than heavy.
