This open ended rattan log basket is a Kubu grey rattan basket with a lowered front, in three sizes or as a set of all three. The small measures 41 x 30 x 26 cm, 41 cm to the top of the handle, with a 10 cm front lip, at 1.8 kg. The medium is 51 x 37 x 31 cm, 51 cm to the handle, with an 11 cm lip, at 2.6 kg. The large is 61 x 46 x 36 cm, 59 cm to the handle, with an 11.5 cm lip. All three take logs, kindling and firewood.

The open end is what separates this from an ordinary log basket. The front wall drops away to a lip of 10 to 11.5 cm, so logs come out from the side instead of being hauled up and over a full-height wall, and the basket loads straight from a barrow or a sack without anyone having to tip it. It also means you can see how much wood is left from across the room rather than peering in. Kubu rattan is soaked in clay before weaving, which is where the soft grey comes from, and it keeps the basket light for something this size.

Which size should I choose?

The small at 41 x 30 cm fits a narrow hearth and holds an evening's worth. The medium at 51 x 37 cm is the usual choice for a wood burner in regular use. The large at 61 x 46 cm is a proper store, and once it is full of hardwood it is not something you will want to carry far. The set gives you a small at the fire and larger ones held back.

Is it lined?

No. This is bare rattan, so over time bark and dust will work through the weave. If you would rather the debris stayed in the basket, take one of our hessian or Cordura lined log baskets instead.

Can I carry it when it is full?

There is a fixed handle across the top, so yes for the small and medium. A large basket packed with hardwood is a serious weight, and if you are moving wood any distance on a regular basis our wheeled log basket saves the lifting altogether.

What is Kubu rattan?

Rattan that has been soaked in a clay bath before weaving, which gives it the soft grey tone rather than the yellow of raw cane. It runs through our whole rattan range, so pieces match each other.
