This classic picnic blanket comes in two sizes, both with a cotton and polyester face and a waterproof backing. The small measures 70 x 100 cm, weighs 300 g and folds to 30 x 18 x 5 cm. The large is 145 x 120 cm at 700 g and folds to 30 x 18 x 10 cm. Both carry a handle.

The folded size is what to look at. Both pack to the same 30 x 18 cm footprint and differ only in thickness, so the small slips into a rucksack pocket and the large into a hamper. The small seats one, or a child; the large takes two adults with the food between them.

Which size do I need?

The small at 70 x 100 cm is a one-person or one-child blanket. The large at 145 x 120 cm seats two adults with the hamper and the food in between. If you want four people round the edges, our Cream Polar Fleece Picnic Rug is bigger again at 150 x 140 cm.

How waterproof is the backing?

It keeps ground damp off while you are sitting on it. Treat it as a picnic blanket rather than a groundsheet: on properly wet grass it will hold for a sitting, not all afternoon.

How does it pack away?

It folds into itself with a handle, down to 30 x 18 cm and either 5 cm or 10 cm thick depending on size. That is small enough to keep in the car and forget about.

Can I wash it?

Clean it by hand rather than in the machine, and let it dry fully before it gets folded away.
