This antique wash wicker square laundry basket is a tall willow hamper with a removable cotton lining, in two sizes and a choice of three lining colours. The small measures 34 x 34 x 50 cm at 1.7 kg; the large is 46 x 46 x 61 cm at 3.8 kg. Both hold the washing between loads, and do the same job for towels, bedding, toys or blankets once the laundry is done.

These are tall rather than wide, which is the trade most bathrooms and bedrooms want, because floor space is what runs out first. At 50 and 61 cm deep they take a great deal in a footprint of only 34 or 46 cm square, and the square shape pushes into a corner or a gap beside a bath without leaving the wasted crescents a round hamper does. The lining is cotton and lifts out, so it goes through the machine rather than being scrubbed in place, and it comes in white, rose or grey sage. Cream faux leather is used for the fittings, and the handles are worked into the sides.

Which size should I choose?

The small at 34 cm square and 50 cm tall suits one or two people, or a bathroom where the floor is spoken for. The large at 46 cm square and 61 cm tall is the family basket. The set of two is how most households end up running it, one for lights and one for darks, so the sorting happens before the machine rather than on the floor in front of it.

Does the lining come out?

Yes. It is cotton, it lifts out, and it goes in the machine. Put it back once it is completely dry.

Which lining colour should I pick?

White is the neutral one, rose a soft pink and grey sage a muted green-grey. It is the same cotton in all three, so it is purely a question of what suits the room.

Can I put damp towels in it?

Better not. Willow and cotton both want air, so damp washing is best left out to dry before it goes in. Anything that does go in wet should come out sooner rather than later.
