This mini oval shopper is a small buff wicker basket, hand-woven from full buff willow with a fixed arched handle. The body is 23 x 18 x 10 cm, the handle brings it to 27 cm, it weighs 100 g, and it carries eggs, posies or bridesmaid flowers.

Its handle reaches 27 cm from the floor, 4 cm higher than the Two-Tone Mini Shopper on an identical body, which leaves room to carry it over a forearm. Buff willow has the bark stripped off before weaving, so the finish comes out pale honey.

Why is the handle so high on such a small basket?

The arch stands 27 cm from the base, which is the tallest of our mini shoppers. It clears a child’s arm easily and an adult can hook it over a forearm with both hands free.

What makes buff willow pale?

The bark is taken off the rods before they are woven, leaving the wood underneath. That is what gives buff its even, light honey colour, and it is why buff baskets look far more uniform than unpeeled ones.

Is this the same basket as the Two-Tone Mini Shopper?

Same body: both are 23 x 18 x 10 cm and 100 g. The Two-Tone weaves unpeeled rods in alongside the buff and its handle sits at 23 cm, 4 cm lower than this one.

Are they sturdy enough for a child to carry about?

At 100 g empty there is very little to lift, and the handle is woven into the body rather than pinned to the rim, so there is no joint to pull apart. It is a basket rather than a toy, so expect it to age with use.
