Four square coasters, cut from natural slate and left unfinished. Slate splits along its own bedding planes, so every face carries its own texture and shading, and no two in the set match exactly.

They go under mugs, glasses and teapots to keep rings and heat marks off a dining table, a coffee table or a worktop. Slate takes chalk and chalk pen, which wipes off with a damp cloth, so they double as place markers at a table. Test a corner with anything oily first.

FAQs

Is there anything on the underside?

They are bare slate on both faces, with no backing pad fitted. Email us if you would like us to turn a set over and describe the underside before you order.

Will a hot teapot crack the slate?

Slate is used for hearths and roofing, so it handles the warmth of a teapot or a mug. A pan straight off the hob is a job for a proper trivet.

Are the four identical?

The cut is the same at 11 x 11 cm and 6 mm, and the surface is not. Slate carries its own grain and shading, so expect four related coasters rather than four matching ones.

Can I write on them with chalk?

Natural slate takes chalk and chalk pen, and both wipe off with a damp cloth. The surface is unsealed, so test a corner with anything oily first.
