This antique wash Christmas tree decoration is a tabletop tree woven from split willow around a metal frame, measuring 30 x 10 x 37 cm and weighing 300 g. It comes with three feet so it stands on its own, and suits a mantelpiece, windowsill or hall table.

Split willow means the rods are cut lengthways before weaving, which gives a flatter, finer strand than a whole rod. The metal frame underneath is what keeps the shape rather than the weave itself. At 30 x 10 cm in plan it takes a narrow shelf, and at 300 g it is light enough for a windowsill.

Does it need anything to stand up?

No. Three feet come with it, so it stands on a flat surface without a stand or a hook.

Can I put lights on it?

Battery lights, yes, and the open weave is what makes it work: the wire tucks between the rods rather than sitting on top. Keep mains lights and anything that warms up away from it, as this is dry willow.

What is split willow?

Willow rods cut lengthways before they are woven, which gives a flatter and finer strand than a whole round rod. It is what allows a piece this size to be woven closely rather than openly.

Can it go outside?

Not for the season. Willow left out in the wet softens and the metal frame will mark it. A porch or a covered doorway for an evening is fine; a garden through December is not.
