This antique wash shallow storage basket is a wide, low willow basket with a handle standing 5 to 7 cm above the rim, in three sizes or as a set of all three, lined or unlined. The small measures 43 x 27 x 19 cm at 600 g unlined, the medium 52 x 32 x 22 cm at 900 g, and the large 59 x 39 x 25 cm at 1.2 kg. A removable cotton lining adds around 200 g.

The proportions are what to look at: 59 x 39 cm of floor on the large against only 25 cm of depth. That is a great deal of area for the height, which makes these the baskets that go under a bed, under a console table or along the bottom of a wardrobe, where anything taller will not fit and anything smaller wastes the space. The handle matters as much as the footprint here, because it stands only 5 to 7 cm proud of the rim instead of arching over, so the basket slides into a low gap and back out again without the handle catching on whatever is above it.

Will it fit under a bed?

Measure the clear height under the frame first, and remember to allow for the handle as well as the basket. The three are 19, 22 and 25 cm tall, and the handle adds another 5 to 7 cm on top of that, so the small needs 24 cm of clearance and the large 32 cm.

Which size should I choose?

Length is what separates them: 43, 52 and 59 cm. The small suits a wardrobe shelf or the end of a bed. The medium is the general-purpose one. The large at 59 x 39 cm holds a household's spare bedding or a playroom's worth of toys.

Lined or unlined?

Unlined leaves the weave on show, which most people prefer for a basket that lives in a bedroom. The lining is worth taking for clothing and bedding, where you would rather nothing caught on the willow, and it lifts out to be washed.

Can I carry it by the handle when it is full?

Yes, though the handle is there for sliding and lifting rather than for carrying any distance. At 59 cm long and loaded with bedding, the large is a two-handed basket.
