How To Keep Your Home Organised On Christmas Morning
Christmas can be chaotic to say the least - and, if you’re hosting friends & family, keeping your home organised whilst the little ones (or big ones!) open their gifts is key to a stress-free day. But, it's easier said than done. In this article, our organisation experts share the best life hacks and tidying tricks to help you keep your home clutter and mess-free on the 25th. So, let’s get started, here’s how you can stay organised on Christmas morning:
-
Assemble any fiddly toys in advance
-
Create a Christmas day essentials box with batteries, bin bags, scissors, and wet wipes
-
As soon as someone opens a gift, chuck wrapping into a dedicated bin bag
-
Have a gift ‘bin’ for each family member to put opened gifts into
-
Plan a simple, grab & go breakfast
-
Assign clean-up responsibilities to everyone in the family - not just you!
Read on to learn how to create a Christmas Day essentials box, and tips for keeping your home tidy ahead of guests later in the day.
Tips For Staying Organised Christmas Morning
Here are some of the most effective tips and tricks to keep your home stress-free on Christmas morning!
Plan Toy Assembly in Advance
Screwing together kids' toys can be time-consuming, especially if your little one is looking right over your shoulder as you do it! If your kids have gifts that require assembly, try setting up larger or more complicated toys the night before, or even earlier in advance than that. This way, you’ll avoid getting bogged down with assembly on Christmas morning, giving you extra time to relax with your mimosa!
Create a Christmas Day Essentials Box
A Christmas Day box is one of the best lifehacks for staying organised come Christmas morning. The last thing you want is to be running around like a headless chicken, rummaging through once-tidy draws just to find that goddamn screwdriver…
The box should include all the bits you’ll usually end up running around for on Christmas morning. Think batteries, bin bags, tools, etc, all in one simple storage basket, which is easy to prepare ahead of time. At a minimum, your Christmas Day box should include:
-
Scissors
-
Batteries
-
A pen & notepad (so you can note down which gifts came from who, ready for writing thank-you notes at a later date!)
-
Screwdrivers
-
Bin bags
-
Baby wipes / sanitiser spray
-
… and a storage basket to pop everything in!

Be Ready With a Bin Bag For Gift Opening
Yes, you 100% will look like every mother and grandmother in the country, but being ready with a bin bag ready to collect any gift wrap and packaging is a quick way to minimise mess on the floor. As everyone opens their gifts, periodically remind them to pop the rubbish in the bag - this saves a massive tidy-up for you afterwards!
Dedicate a Gift Bin To Each Family Member
To save having gifts strewn across every corner of the house, we’d recommended having a dedicated ‘gift bin’ or basket for each family member to pop their gifts in after opening, especially if they aren’t being used right away. Not only does this help to keep your home organised and mess-free, but a basket is much easier to carry upstairs to each kid’s bedroom - rather than carrying one toy at a time!
Having a storage basket for each family member’s gift is even more important if you are elsewhere for Christmas - the last thing you want is toys being left at a relative’s house because they were left amongst the chaos of Christmas morning!
Prep a Simple Breakfast
Whilst eggs benedict and glass of fizz is a staple for me on Christmas morning, it sometimes isn’t the most practical choice amongst the chaos of Christmas morning, especially when kids are involved! Keeping breakfast a simple affair can free up time for spending time with family, or even simply enjoying that extra 10 minutes in bed (before you get dragged out of it by the little ones!).
Things like yoghurt & granola, scrambled eggs on toast, or chia pudding are great options. If breakfast can be self-serve, like simple pastries or cereals, even better! This saves you catering for everyone in the morning.
Assign Clean-Up Roles
If you’re hosting family and friends for Christmas dinner, spending hours cleaning up after gift opening and breakfast won’t be the best use of your time. Instead, share the responsibility of tidying up by assigning simple tasks to family members.
For example, one person collects gift wrap into a bin bag, another handles dishes, and someone else organises gifts into the correct spot. Make it fun by turning it into a timed challenge!
Use Storage Bins For Decorations & Other Bits
Whilst it’s not strictly part of Christmas morning, it never hurts to be organised in advance! Having clearly labelled bins for your decorations, gift wrap, and leftover Christmas items can make clean-up post-Christmas a breeze.
