You can customise every detail, from the size to the foliage and embellishments. How To DIY a Christmas Wreath
1. Gathering Supplies
Before you can even start making your creative ideas a reality, you’ll need to gather the supplies needed to make your Christmas wreath. These elements are essential to the project, but the size, colour, and style are completely up to you!
2. Attaching Wire To Your Base
Start off by grabbing your wreath frame and florist wire. If you’d like to hang your wreath on your front door, decide where the top will be and attach a loop of wire. Then start off your project by wrapping one end of your wire around the frame with a couple of twists.
3. Creating A Moss Base
Gather your moss and separate it into smaller chunks. Secure them to the frame by wrapping the wire around it, and continue until the base is covered. Moss gives the wreath more depth, but is also a source of moisture for the foliage you’ll add later.
4. Adding Foliage
Bring your foliage together in small bunches and start attaching them to your wreath by wrapping the wire around them. Try putting longer branches at the back of bunches and make sure everything is laying in the same direction. You’ll also need to overlap each bundle to make sure your wreath looks as full as possible.
Do this until the base is covered and then cut the floral wire from the reel. Just make sure you leave enough wire to secure it by twisting it around itself.
5. Spice It Up With Decorations
To attach decorations to your wreath, you’ll want to cut some lengths of wire. Bend them in half and wrap them around a suitable place. This will create ‘legs’ for you to then attach extras. Add them at random around the wreath by twisting the wire a few times on the back.
6. Hang Your Finished Product
Once you’ve got your wreath looking exactly how you want it, it’s time to hang it up with the wire loop we attached earlier and a hook on your door. If you didn’t add a wire loop, you could also use a length of ribbon, tie it around the wreath, and then fluff your foliage back up to cover any gaps.

FAQs
How Do I Keep My Wreath Looking Good?
Spraying your wreath with water throughout the festive season should keep it looking healthy. The moss used as a base is good for holding onto moisture, so your foliage should last a while without looking limp. Of course, this all depends on what type of greenery you use and what decorations you add. A wreath with a wicker base and added décor is a more long-term investment, as you can simply replace the additions when they break or wither.
Can I Hang A Wreath Without Damaging My Door?
Yes! There are a number of ways you can decorate the outside of your home with a wreath. There may already be a natural place for hanging it on your door, like a knocker. You could also add a nail to an adjacent wall or wooden structure to avoid permanent damage to the wall itself. Another favourite technique is using damage-free hooks. They’re put up wherever you like using double-sided stickers, and can easily be removed after Christmas.
Is It Cheaper To Make A Wreath Or Buy One?
Generally, it’s cheaper to make your own wreath than buying a ready-made one. If you’re going for the handmade look, these can get quite expensive to repurchase year after year. Buying your own supplies gives you the chance to shop around and find the cheapest prices, rather than having to balance budget and quality. Making your own wreath also means you have more freedom with its style, size, and colour scheme!
