This small wicker bicycle basket is a steamed willow basket with two 25 cm real leather straps, measuring 36 x 31 cm across the top, 29 x 24 cm at the base and 23 cm deep, at 600 g. It straps to the front handlebars of an adult bike and carries shopping, a bag or a packed lunch.

"Small" here means small for a bicycle basket rather than small in absolute terms. At 36 x 31 cm across the top it is roomier than our heritage oval, and the base stays wide at 29 x 24 cm, so a bag of shopping sits flat on the bottom instead of wedging down into a taper. Twenty-three centimetres of depth keeps a full load below the rim rather than heaped above it. The straps are real leather and buckle around the bars rather than clipping on, which takes a moment longer to fit and means the basket lifts straight off when you want to carry the shopping indoors.

How does it compare with your Heritage Oval bike basket?

Despite the name, this is the larger of the two: 36 x 31 cm across the top against 29 x 25.5 cm, and a far wider base at 29 x 24 cm against 20 x 15 cm. The heritage oval is lighter at 400 g and tapers more sharply. If capacity is what you are after, take this one.

Will it fit my bike?

It fits the front handlebars of any adult bike, held by two 25 cm leather straps. For a child's bike, measure the gap between the handlebars and the front wheel against the dimensions above, or take our children's bicycle basket instead.

Does it go on the front or the back?

Front only. It hangs from the handlebars, and there is nothing at the back of a bike for the straps to hold it upright against.

How should I look after it?

Bring it in rather than leaving it on the bike overnight in the wet. Willow copes with a shower and dries out again, but weeks of standing damp will not do it any favours, and the leather straps appreciate an occasional wipe.
