What is water hyacinth, and why is it used for storage baskets?

Water hyacinth is a freshwater plant whose stems can be dried and woven into household products. The resulting fibres have a distinctive texture and natural colouring, making them popular for decorative storage. In this basket, the weave is supported by a metal framework that helps maintain its rectangular shape.

Will these storage baskets fit on ordinary shelves?

Suitability depends on the dimensions and depth of your shelving unit. The baskets are designed for general household organisation, but it is important to check both the available shelf depth and the vertical clearance above the basket. Allow extra room to lift items out comfortably.

Can I use these baskets to organise towels and clothing?

Yes. The open interior makes them suitable for folded towels, dry clothing and other household textiles. Their medium depth allows several items to be stacked while remaining reasonably accessible. Avoid storing damp laundry, as prolonged moisture can affect natural plant fibres.

How do the metal frame and woven fibres work together?

The water hyacinth forms the visible woven surface, while the metal framework provides an underlying structure. This helps the basket retain its rectangular form and defined corners during normal use. The natural fibres give it a softer decorative appearance than an exposed metal storage container.

How should I clean a water hyacinth basket?

Remove dust with a soft brush or vacuum attachment on a gentle setting. For minor marks, use a lightly dampened cloth and allow the basket to dry naturally. Avoid soaking the fibres or placing the basket against direct heat while drying.
