This set of four square slate coasters is cut from natural slate, each one 11 x 11 cm and 6 mm thick, with the four together weighing 600 g. They go under mugs, glasses and teapots to keep rings and heat marks off a table or a worktop.

Slate splits along its natural bedding planes, so each face carries its own texture and no two coasters match exactly. Our supplier records no backing pad on these.

Is there anything on the underside?

Our supplier records natural slate and nothing else, so we make no claim about backing pads. Email us and we will turn a set over and tell you what is on the underside before you order.

Will a hot teapot crack the slate?

We have no heat rating from our supplier and will not publish one. Slate is used for hearths and roofing, so it handles warmth, but we would put a pot straight off the hob onto a proper trivet.

Are the four identical?

The cut is the same at 11 x 11 cm and 6 mm, and the surface is not. Slate carries its own grain and shading, so expect four related coasters rather than four matching ones.

Can I write on them with chalk?

Natural slate takes chalk and chalk pen, and both wipe off with a damp cloth. Nothing on our supplier sheet says the surface is sealed against staining, so test a corner with anything oily first.
