This light steamed square split willow tray measures 27 x 27 cm at the rim on a 20 x 20 cm base, stands 13 cm tall and weighs 200 g. It takes an indoor plant pot, keys and post by a front door, or a small run of packaged goods on a shelf.

Calling this a tray undersells it. At 13 cm deep with sides that taper in to a 20 cm square base, it holds standing items rather than flat ones, which is why most of them end up around a plant pot or by a door. Split willow keeps it to 200 g, so it lifts one-handed when it is full.

Is it really a tray?

At 13 cm deep it behaves more like a small square basket. We have kept the name it has always had, but go in expecting something you can stand things up in rather than lay them out on.

What size plant pot will it take?

The base is 20 x 20 cm, so a pot up to about 19 cm across drops in and sits flat. Anything wider will wedge partway down rather than reaching the bottom.

Can I put a watered plant in it?

Only with a saucer or a liner underneath. Bare willow and standing water do not get on, and a pot draining straight into the weave will mark it and eventually rot it.

Why is the base smaller than the top?

The sides slope in, which is how the shape is woven. It also means two of the same size sit inside one another when they are empty, so a run of them stores in less space than you would think.
