How waterproof is the backing?

It is there to keep ground damp off, and that is how to think about it. This is a picnic rug rather than a groundsheet, so on genuinely wet grass expect it to keep you dry for a sitting rather than all afternoon.

Can I wash it?

Yes, it machine washes. For mud and crumbs a wipe down and a shake out is usually enough, and it is worth letting it dry fully before it gets rolled up.

Does it fold into a carrying case?
