This is the deep sort of lidded wooden box rather than a shallow one: unvarnished pine, dovetailed at the corners, with two metal hinges, a clasp and hand holds cut into the ends. One size, one finish.

Depth is the thing to weigh up: contents stack, though the top layer comes out to reach the bottom. Filled, it is heavy enough to stay where it is put instead of being carried about, so a cupboard floor or the foot of a bed suits it better than a high shelf. The bare pine takes paint, stain or wax directly.

Which of the three sizes should I choose?

The 12 inch is 30 x 23 x 11 cm, the 14 inch is 36 x 27 x 14 cm and this one is 40 x 31 x 18.5 cm. All three are the same build, so it comes down to depth. This is the one to choose if the contents will be stacked rather than laid out in a single layer.

Is it varnished?

No. The pine is left bare, which is why it takes paint, stain or wax readily. If you want a finished box, the 12 and 14 inch come in a white wash.

Is it strong enough to sit on?

We would not recommend it. It is a storage box rather than a bench or a blanket chest, and the lid is not built to carry weight.

How should I look after it?

Keep it indoors and dry. Bare pine will mark if something wet is left standing on it, and the hinges and clasp are metal.
