This lidded wooden box has an oak effect finish, grained to look like aged oak, with metal hinges and a clasp at the front. There are three sizes: the two larger are dovetailed at the corners with hand holds cut into the ends, the smallest a plainer build.

A clasped lid stays shut when the box is carried or put in a car, which is why as many go out as gifts as go onto a shelf. The smallest is shallow and suits watches or jewellery; the largest is deep, and better for tools, paperwork or hamper contents.

Which size should I choose?

The 12 inch at 30 x 23 cm and only 11 cm deep is a shallow box, right for a watch, jewellery or a small gift. The 14 inch is the middle option and the one most people take. The 16 inch at 40 x 31 cm and 18.5 cm deep is deep enough for tools, paperwork or a hamper's worth of contents.

Is it real oak?

No. It is wood with an oak effect finish, grained and coloured to look like aged oak rather than cut from it. The largest size is built in pine underneath.

Does it lock?

No. The metal clasp holds the lid closed but there is no lock or key, so treat it as a box rather than a safe.

Is it suitable for giving as a gift?

It is one of the more common reasons people buy it. The clasp means the box can be filled and closed without wrapping, and because it is a real box rather than packaging, whoever receives it keeps using it afterwards.
